Located in the center of Beijing and adjacent to the Tian'anmen to the east, ** Park is a classic commemorative garden covering 23.8 hectares.
It was formerly the Temple of National Prosperity during the Liao Dynasty, and was renamed the Temple of Longevity and National Prosperity during the Yuan Dynasty. In the 18th year of Yongle’s Reign during the Ming Dynasty (1420), the Altar of Land and Grain was built in accordance with the rule of “the Temple of Ancestors to the Left while the Altar of Land and Grain to the Right” as prescribed in the Rites of Zhou. Symbolizing the royal reign and the national revenue, this is where emperors worshipped the God of Land and the God of Grain. From the 19th year of Yongle’s Reign of the Ming Dynasty (1421) to the 3rd year of Xuantong’s Reign of the Qing Dynasty (1911), 1300 worship rites were conducted, either personally by the emperors of the two dynasties or by senior officials dispatched by them.
In 1914, Zhongshan Park was turned into a public park at the initiative of Zhu Qiqian, a minister at the Ministry of the Internal Affairs of the Beiyang Government. Initially called Central Park, this became the first public garden in Beijing. In 1925,Mr. Sun Yat-sen passed away and his coffin was temporarily placed in Zhongshan Hall for public worship. To commemorate this great pioneer of democratic revolution, the park was renamed Zhongshan Park in 1928.
CPC and national leaders such as Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De and Deng Xiaoping, have participated in May 1st and Oct.1st activities held in the park. Other famous spots in the park include the Ancient Cypresses of the Liao Dynasty, the Altar of Land and Grain, Zhongshan Hall, Peace-Defending Arch, Lantingbei Pavilion, Maxim Pavillion, Garden of Fragrant Flowers and Waterside Flower Greenhouse. Approved by the State Council in 1988, the garden was listed as a nationally protected major site for cultural relics. In 2000, the garden was awarded the title of Civilized Unit in Beijing. And in 2002, it was graded as one of the first elaborate parks in Beijing.
